Valencia acts as the World Capital of Design 2022, so it seemed reasonable to stop by and take some photos at Habitat 2022, which is a furniture and lighting fair that takes place at the Exhibition Fair.

It is, according to the organization, the biggest fair in the sector. In any case, there are more than 70,000 square meters of exhibition (an increase of 8% with respect to 2019) and a good handful of activities that I did not attend because I decided to spend my time capturing some images. I am not a professional neither in the design nor in the commercialization of the sectors that were exhibiting.

Data on Habitat 2022

408 exhibitors and 603 firms represented. Habitat 2022 is actually the sum of three events: the 56th International Furniture Fair, the 53rd International Lighting Fair and the 18th NUDE, Young Talents Show. But simultaneously Textilhogar  and Espacio Cocina SICI (kitchen furniture) were also held. So in total, some 48,000 professionals will visit for one or another of the activities. An occupancy of 92% of the nearby hotels was reached, of which approximately half of this occupancy is attributed to the fairs.

Actually, taking advantage of a visit and taking photos is the point of the post. But since I was there and had the images, incorporating a little information always comes in handy, in case someone happens to drop by here and wants to know a little more.

The point is that if you need photos you can contact me at sergi@archerphoto.eu . Also by sending a message to +34 644459753. Here is the link if you want to see more examples of my photos for business in Valencia or elsewhere. I hope you were interested in these photos in Habitat 2022. And if you want to follow me on Instagram, where my photos have nothing to do with this, @Archerphoto .

In the photographic studio with Patricia

In the photographic studio with Patricia, by Archerphoto, fashion photographer in Valencia, Alicante, Madrid and Barcelona

July can be a terrible month. The heat complicates everything. But with a little air conditioning, some patience and Elena’s good work on the brushes and costume styling we get very positive results. A session in the photo studio with Patricia, a very young model and, as you will see, beautiful, but who behaved with all the necessary professionalism.

You can read this article in Spanish: En el estudio fotográfico con Patricia.

Actually, this session has few details to tell. Everything was cordial and we were able to survive thanks to the air conditioning, because that day they had to do in Valencia about 42ºC or something, and although in the photographic studio I usually use LED light, between the computer, the three people, the sun giving the building and the lights, we could have all boiled up: makeup artist, model and photographer.

As you can see, there were two different makeups during the photo shoot. Hence we were in the studio for a while, although I, for a long time, was just sitting and talking with them.

In the photographic studio with Patricia: good results and good time

Making photo shoots this quiet is appreciated. These months I have been doing more outside, in the sun, and although one tries to manage the forces, one does not get tired just like shooting in the studio. Even when I have to move lights, it is more comfortable.

Obviously, one of the purposes of the session in the photo studio with Patricia was to show Elena’s makeup well. Hence the selection of plans, but I must admit that I always end up processing something that seems particularly interesting to me. In this case, in addition, in black and white.

The Art of Paloma. Interview and photos.

The Art of Paloma by Archerphoto, photographer in Valencia

*You can read this article in Spanish in my other web. Entrevista y fotos a The Art of Paloma.

The growing weight of Instagram is undeniable. Navigating the culture of the image, one finds many people who in one way or another dedicate their efforts to this network. Not everyone has the same talent, ability or resilience to achieve results, so there are especially interesting cases. One of the accounts that came to my attention was Paloma García Cuanda, The Art of Paloma, so it seemed like a good idea to contact her for a while.

My idea was basically to talk and take a picture, but we turned the interview into a photo shoot. I asked her a few things and then I had to supplement that questions by phone, because, well, the photographs ate the interview.

The Art of Paloma by Archerphoto, photographer Valencia

The origins of The Art of Paloma

The Art of Paloma is not an Instagram account that appears suddenly because a 15-year-old girl discovers that she can get attention with the photos of the ice cream she eats. Paloma was experimenting quite a long time ago, in an old application called Fotolog and that was a kind of Instagram precursor. The concept was similar, but since mobile technology was not as advanced as it is today, the web was weakened and forgotten. “I started there,” says Paloma. «It was a platform where you uploaded a photo a day and there also began bloggers who later became known as Lovely Pepa or Gala González. It’s what was fashionable then

Paloma forgot a little Fotolog, and years later, she made a first attempt at Blogger where she began to release more elaborate content. «I read in a magazine that they talked about a blogger who I remembered from Fotolog. And she talked about her blog. I got in, saw it, and thought about riding one. I created a very fond one and after a while, they called me from a communication agency and offered me a professional blog and a five-year contract.

Sincerity above all

“Working in consulting” explains Paloma, who studied Business Administration and Law, “I have little time, because you have more responsibilities, and it is difficult to make posts, so the blog is a bit uncared. It’s also because with Instagram, which is what really generates the most engagement, for many brands it is enough. I like to write on the blog and it is another tool. I do not want to abandon it at all and if one day, I can,  under the rhythm of work I would like to retake it, but the last post I published it a few months ago. I feel sorry because I have photos, lots of information about restaurants, hotels, there is a lot of material … ».

One of the amazing things about Paloma is that, despite being a person with a profile dedicated to the image, it does not convey at any time the sense of superficiality that one might expect. If you have to recognize that something does not come, it does. A very transparent, almost crystalline self-criticism ability.

The Art of Paloma by Archerphoto, photographer in Valencia, Alicante and Madrid

Paloma currently has just over 172,000 followers, a more than remarkable figure. It has an important interaction with its followers, a reasonable publication rate and a very careful quality in all its contents, both in the selection of styles and in the aspect of photography.

«The Art of Paloma has more than 172,000 followers»

“It is very complicated” also explains “that a person manages an entire brand. Above all, it’s complicated to differentiate yourself from the rest and find that particular aspect that distinguishes you from others. It is very easy to copy others, to do what everyone does (although you are also inspired by what others do), but to find that part of you that likes and triumphs ». The work carried out is often difficult to detect, but the impression of authenticity and consistency that it transmits requires, paradoxically, a lot of work.

Caring for the audience

One of the curiosities that Paloma tells us about her Instagram is that, despite being fashionable, the percentage of male followers is significantly higher than the female. «It probably has to do with photos. That’s why I try to keep my balance by putting more fashion or travel photos, than bikini photos for example ».

“The main thing when you start a blog,” he explains, “is to think of a target, a target audience and see what qualities you have to reach those people. In my case, I offer lifestyle, travel, fashion, I try to ensure that the photographs are taken care of – with professional photographers – and of quality … ». When we comment on this, he confesses that he is working to improve engagement and answering all comments and messages. This extreme, that of caring for followers, is particularly laborious, but essential for maintaining a good fan base. They are people and it is important that they feel valued. “You have to take care of the audience, answer them and see them as someone close,”she says.

«I care very much about my photographs and I work with professional photographers»

We had a lot of this conversation more informally while we were taking the photos. It is true that, in personal treatment, she is much closer than one would expect, and it is that gap between the photo and its real character that wants to close.

The future outlook for Paloma, in the short term, continues on Instagram. It is clear that the increasingly clear trend is video. «More and more real things, more spontaneous, than what is now on Instagram, where things are more artificial».

My name is Sergi Albir. I am a professional photographer in Valencia, Madrid, Barcelona and more places. If you need me, whistle. Well, and if you see that that does not work, you better send me an email to sergi@archerphoto.eu or a Whatsapp, or Telegram, at +34 644459753. Photo session in studio

Determining the type of lighting is always a small dilemma. I tend to be a supporter of working outdoors with natural lighting. I often use a reflector to help me, but while lighting results are lovely, most of the time the reflector must be handled by a person. And for a photo shoot in studio I am in favor of using continuous lighting.

That said, continuous lighting has advantages and disadvantages, and flashes, too. So I have to keep doing tests, as in this session with Mariana Uscanga, from which I show you the results. I used several flashes, filters and reflectors. If there is an amateur photographer who would like to know the setting used, I will have to disappoint him. I took many photos, many experiments, I moved everything and there was not one setting, but a bunch of them. And of course, I did not wrote them up. I do not usually release photography tutorials because there is a lot of competition. Producing them usually has a job much greater than what people imagine. So a hug to the photographers who take that effort and  I send for them my recognition and respect.

Once the photo session is finished …

After a photo session in studio, one must apply in the editing work. In many of these cases, one of the tasks is in the selection of which are the photos we want, because there are often many similar ones. About the selection it is important to decide, more or less, what we are going to do, so that the work does not become too long. In this case, the idea was to keep the interest in the model totally. Eliminating any detail left over from the background was a priority. Then, the control of the tones is another crucial question. And as some of the photos will end, badly that I regret, on Instagram, it was also appropriate to leave them ready for that application.

Mariana had enough patience not to kill me even though there were many experiments, a few disasters and a significant number of repetitions. But probably you will agree with me that the temper and endurance of this Mexican model had a fair reward.

portfolio for models Archerphoto professional photographer Valencia Spain

It’s being a quite productive season. If I was doing a lot of videos during the winter, now the portfolios for models, sessions and photos are being a more important part of the work. And they are, without doubt, good fun and in general, very interesting. It is true that in many cases there are topics such as makeup, hairdressing and subsequent editing are a more laborious job than a report of an event, but it is worth it.

Of the sessions, all of them in Spain and most of them in Valencia, some have been boudoir photography, other conventional books and some other professional session. There are also some things that just do not fit here, because they are more private in scope, and there are also other photos that belong to ongoing projects that are not finished and I prefer not to show yet. In some cases work was for a model, in one for a dancer and in another for a person who did not dedicate himself professionally to the image, but in every case we make the maximum effort to obtain the best result.

As I often find, my option for many of the photos final result looks better to me in old black and white. I still can not explain easily why.

Dreamhack Spain 2017: results and photos

It’s always worth going through big video games competitions. And more if you have them close to home, as was the case of Dreamhack Spain 2017 (it happened in Valencia again). This time I was not working for the Valencia CF eSports, which had just dissolved its League of Legends team. However the trophy of this competition was for @Elite_Valencia , another local team sponsored by a local specialized in electronic sports that achieved a historical triumph.

However, Evangelion was representing the football club. who had bad luck at the start and after two consecutive defeats, despite a good late streak could not pass the round. If I’m not mistaken, he was the only representative of Valencia CF.  , also a Spaniard, would end up doing the victory against the British  . The joy of this triumph was also contagious amongst fans.

Other competitions and results in Dreamhack

In CSGO NiPGaming won against the also Swedes @RedReserve and in Starcraft2 @ElazerSC2 beat Snute. TRUE and SpeCial were stuck in the semi-finals, which surprised lots of spectators.

In the competition of Smite we saw  winning 3-2 to  in the last match of Summer Finals.

And without more delay, some photos of the competition: there was oriental food, cosplay, contests and a huge LAN area, but it looked much less than the competitions, of course. I may reinforce this post with a video, but I can’t promise.

Edit photos with free software: GIMP

No one doubts that Photoshop is today the key reference in image editing. Many photographers, including myself, are using Lightroom instead of conventional Photoshop. Lightroom is another Adobe product. They are not really helping much to clarify things with their products’ naming: it is official name is Adobe Photoshop Lightroom.

But if, like me, you have several computers and you are not willing to pay one license for each of them, and you still want to have software completely legal, I can recommend GIMP. It is a free software, very powerful, that is a step behind Photoshop. This may sound like “bah, it’s worse, I will not settle”, but anyone who has put their hands on Photoshop realizes that you can work with previous versions without problem. GIMP can make your photos better. And you can begin in minutes. Of course, they provide complete help documentation and a community of users quite friendly.

Edit photos with free software: GIMP

Working with GIMP is equivalent to that, working with an earlier version. It also has small differences in some nomenclatures and locations, but it is about details. It is easy to find the way to work with this system that is also multiplatform. We can treat photos on Windows, Linux or MacOS. GIMP is being updated with the contributions of programmers from all over the world who are interested in free software, so it stays competitive with the passage of time. GIMP is not the only free software available for photo editing, but it’s one of the most interesting. It is quite ready to professional use, and I myself have used it as a professional photographer when I have needed it. Currently I have installed GIMP on all computers, but I will probably use it more on the computer that I am preparing with Linux.

Edit photos with free software: GIMP

Some issues are a bit different, such as the fact that instead of “Save As” most of the options to convert the format of photographs should be carried out like “Export”. Mostly minor issues. Lots of options and many professional photography tools. I miss the possibility of working in 16 bits, but it is something that is not even used by all professionals. However, it is still announced that this feature will be available for a later version.

Downloading GIMP is simple: https://www.gimp.org/downloads/ and is safe. In short, a good free alternative to Photoshop.

Really. This is just to insist that I am a photographer but I also do videos for companies and individuals, as well as content marketing, SEO and things like that in Valencia, Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante, London or Bratislava. Both in the videos and in the photos I can organize the complete work. From the design of the session to the production of the same, including professional makeup, clothing and hairdressing, to the elaboration of complete campaigns, for both businesses and NGOs. For these things I use both conventional software and free software. The best result. Here are some samples: http://www.archerphoto.eu/produccion-audiovisual/

Carmen Álvarez videobook

Carmen Álvarez Videobook Valencia

August was finishing and I was shooting a session that was intended to be a fairly quick question but we ran lengthening lot. We were so into job with the look of ballet that lasted nearly twice as expected. We had prepared it enough, with outfits by Nadia Alba and Carmen Alvarez as a model, and the results were pretty good. However, a problem of saturation of work, I could not get it to this blog, but I showed some photos on Flickr and Facebook and Nadia made her post, I recommend that you read after seeing this entire article (if you speak Spanish. If you don’t the pics are OK, and Google Translate can be an option). However, here it is Carmen Álvarez videobook.

While there are many photos available, Nadia hadn’t the videobook we did for Carmen. It’s a little fashion film and a little videobook. But even if half of those things, I do not see a problem because all serves as a sample of what can be achieved with a few days of intensive work.

Carmen Álvarez en la sesión de su videobook

One of the noteworthy things about this video is that we were testing a Panasonic VX980, which has not given a bad result. It’s not like working with a DSLR, but is much more comfortable in terms of autofocus, it’s lighter and generally more intuitive. In terms of quality it works well enough as long as we do not get into almost total darkness. For photos, as usual, my EOS 5D Mark III. We were shooting in Valencia, Spain. You may have seen some of this place in movies like Tomorrowland and you will see it in Doctor Who.

Here, in addition to the video, are some of the photos we did and did not use it in Nadia’s post. Probably this gallery will be expanded because there is more material that I’ll love showing from the same session.

Photography for Business: Jale castanets

It’s no wonder taking pictures of things I had ever thought. In this case I had to take pictures of one of only three companies in Spain that still produce castanets.

Photography for Business: Jale castanets

The manufacturing process is interesting, but my task was  taking pictures of the final product, not how they work, which is a traditional process in which each piece it is reviewed one by one each before being  sent to the clients.

I did some pictures for their web catalog (http://www.castanuelasjale.com). However mostly I was producing some images in a more attractive, more creative profile, which are intented to illustrate the contents that appear on their blog. Inbound marketing, you know. In general, it is much more fun to work on that line than in the system catalog, which is a technically demanding and arduous photography.
Photography for Business: Jale castanets

Photography for Business: Jale castanets

So, well, you had to play around with the light, texture and the most interesting aspects of the curves. It was essential to use lenses with maximum aperture to achieve a more artistic impression. At the end of the day, the castanets will be used by artists. It was not a purely technical issue, but involved an almost artistic profile. So in some of these pictures, I got carried away a bit. Some images were not really useful for what they needed, so I decided that would use them here. I hope you like it.

Meticulous attention to detail

In any case, the fact is that working with a company that provides such personal attention to their product was more interesting than expected. Personal concern that each piece fits what the end customer will find, especially in terms of color is outstanding, and reveals, of course, their interest for customer satisfaction.
